Contributing to Ship Safety: An Engine Cadet’s Perspective

Security and safety lies in the heart of our crew, we therefore asked one of our engine cadets to explain the role of protocols and how to maintain these crucial aspects on the ship’s machinery.

As an engine cadet, how do you contribute to maintaining the safety and efficiency of the ship’s machinery?

As an engine cadet, I play a crucial role in maintaining the safety and efficiency of the ship’s machinery by assisting in routine inspections, monitoring equipment performance, and performing preventive maintenance tasks.

I work closely with senior engineers to ensure that all machinery operates within safe parameters and that any potential issues are identified and addressed promptly. My responsibilities also include keeping detailed records of maintenance activities and machinery performance, which helps in planning future maintenance and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

What safety protocols do you follow when performing maintenance tasks in the engine room and how do you ensure that these procedures prevent accidents?

When performing maintenance tasks in the engine room, I strictly adhere to established safety protocols to prevent accidents.

These protocols include wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, safety goggles, and hearing protection. I also ensure that machinery is properly shut down and locked out before beginning any maintenance work to prevent accidental startups. Additionally, I follow detailed maintenance procedures and checklists to ensure that all tasks are performed correctly and safely.

Regular safety drills and training sessions help me stay updated on the latest safety practices and emergency procedures, further enhancing my ability to prevent accidents and respond effectively in case of an emergency.
